I suggest calling a credit counsellor, not only to start the process of fixing your credit, but they are typically good resources for advice in matters like that. It may be that the landlords will ask for a larger damage deposit or ask for the last months’ rent up front (as it varies from place to place whether landlords collect last months rent or not).
Also, if you think the landlord may be a more sympathetic person, don’t be afraid to lay out some of the details about the impact your spouse had on your credit, but that you are working to re-establish yourself and just need a break.
